29.1 million people have diabetes. You can learn how to take care of diabetes and prevent some serious problems diabetes can cause. Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above normal. Symptoms may include:

  • Frequent urination

  • Excessive thirst

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Extreme hunger

  • Vision changes

  • Sores that are slow to heal

 

Over time, uncontrolled diabetes can cause serious health complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and nerve pain. 

 

Healthy eating, physical activity, blood glucose testing and taking medication as directed by your provider are basic therapies for diabetes treatment. Every individual needs unique diabetes care, please communicate with your team at RVHDC to help you take control of this condition. 

 

What healthy food choices can I make?

  • Eat smaller portions

  • Eat less high fat foods

  • Eat less sugar by drinking water instead of soda, sweet tea or fruit drinks

  • Eat more whole grain foods like oatmeal, brown rice, and whole wheat bread

  • Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables every day

  • Follow the MyPlate method
